Bertha

Bertha and her family live in the Cochran colonia just outside El Paso, Texas, a neighborhood without basic utilities like water and electricity, which is just a 10-minute walk from city utilities. For decades she lived without running water at home, and with constant fear that her family and neighbors were just one fire away from losing their community, without any water to fight it. These concerns burdened Bertha and her family for years, so much so that she, along with other members of the community, mobilized and protested, pleading with local officials for decades to help bring water to the colonias. She said “they never listened to us”. Bertha and her family finally got access to clean, running water in their home when DigDeep’s Colonias Water Project completed waterline construction in the Cochran colonia – bringing running water to the community after a 30-year fight.
